Diary Entry #1:

Encounter: French woman in Indochina (Christina Chin)

November 8th, 1937

I have just arrived in Vietnam after an unexpected order to go there from my boss. Supposedly there is some incidents going on within the country. I was on my way to my flight until I encountered a military officer by the name of Samuel Wilson. I figured that I would be able to interview him and add some details into my journal. Perhaps extract some information about what's really going on between China and Japan. I had about an hour before my flight so I was able to get quite a bit of information from him on how he felt and what might be going on in Singapore.
Afterwards, I got on my flight to Vietnam and was trying to figure a way out of the airport. I searched around for anyone to help me and I caught a glimpse of a caucasian woman. Perhaps French? I wondered. It turns out I was right. When I walked up to her and asked her in English, she didn't quite comprehend and then I switched to French. Immediately, she was surprised and responded back. I asked her some directions on where I could pick up my luggage and where I could find a decent transportation to my hotel and she kindly guided me to where I should go. She apparently had to pick up her grandmother so she couldn't walk and talk with me. So I thought, while I was interacting with this woman, I could see what was going on in Vietnam with the increasing French tensions and their businesses.
From what she was telling me, it didn't seem that great. The tensions could escalate to major violence and the French could lose their business. I asked the woman if I could go with her by any chance to see how her rubber business was going but she said she was busy and had too much on her hands with her workers and her grandmother. It was a great shame since I could've got a full detail of what was going on through this woman. Maybe I can encounter her some other time when she's not busy but the likelihood of that happening is very slim with this tension going on.

Diary Entry #2:

Encounter: German Businessman (Tim), Chinese girl (Cecilia)

January 29, 1938

I have encountered a German Businessman right now. He is appearing to help these Chinese citizens escape from the Japanese threats and creating a safety zone for the women especially. The rape incidents are growing disturbingly higher. On top of that, there are killings occurring after these rapes. Women are being kidnapped and taken as comfort women for the Japanese military men and never to return again. Grandmothers are being forced to watch their grandchildren be raped or bayoneted, and the grandmothers themselves are to be violated. The German Businessman was able to tell me some more stories of these horror-stricken events. The Japanese appear to be so desperate and violent that they are climbing walls to steal girls from schools. When the schools are closed down for the safety of the women, the Japanese kill the guards to take them. They even take the risk of coming into the safety zone. After he was done explaining, I was able to meet a Chinese girl, about 14 years old. She explained to me the horrendous things that happened to her sister and herself, and most importantly... her mother. The girl was not raped but her mother was unlucky. My heart nearly sank as I heard her story on top of what the German Businessman experienced.
I cannot believe I defended my own nation’s actions in helping Japan invade China for economic reasons in the past. There is no reason for Japan to be such animals. The degrading view of woman and those of the same ancestry have been increasing ever so greatly within this area. It is only a matter of time that Japan get their lesson taught to them with great effect and justice. Not the way they did handled it.
I know for sure that when I go back to London, I will desperately try to publish this but with the extent of such explicit violence it may be possible that my people will ignore what is going on in the Far East. The ignorance of what goes on in wars and what is going on now outside of England is growing bigger but hopefully with my information and knowledge of what is going on now, and some witnesses, the horrors will be told.
I sense that something big will occur within the next few years. This will not be ignored, and Japan does not appear willingly to stop.

Diary Entry #3

Encounter: British officer (Leo)

February 16, 1942

I was called to go back to Vietnam sometimes this late winter. There were rumors and stories of how British officers were captured after Singapore and were escaping to Vietnam. This incident made me think of Samuel Wilson, the middle aged British Officer I encountered at the airport in London. I wondered how he was doing and if he was amongst the officers that escaped. I couldn't bare to imagine him dead, but the possibility is high with what the Japanese are capable of doing to their Prisoners of War.
Once I landed in Vietnam, I tried asking many foreigners if they've seen or heard of any Prisoners of War or War civilians escaping through town. Some said they saw glimpses of men running across fields at nights and through the forests. Some said they saw escapees being captured again and shot on the spot. This was not helping me at all except knowing that it is true there are prisoners escaping... and that it is true that they probably didn't make it if they were recaptured.
I explored some more across villages in a small car I was able to rent for a ridiculous price but I suppose the inflation rate is high at this time. I drove past numerous fields in hopes that I would see someone escaping but at this time of the day, I didn't expect them to be out and about. But then I unexpectedly saw a man run across the field as the sun went down. His clothes were tattered and he appeared to be quite past his years in running. I was hoping to God that this person would be Samuel Wilson. I drove closer and got out of the car, waving frantically at him and yelling the name. He didn't response. I started to think that it wasn't the man at all. I yelled louder and he looked back. Surprisingly, he started to run towards me and I was thinking that he would steal my car. I quickly got into the car, locked the doors, and sat down patiently.
The man got closer and stared at me. There was a moment of silence before he yelled my name out. Yes, it indeed was Samuel Wilson. I allowed him into my car and began to ask him questions but he wouldn't respond. He just told me to drive.
But the problem was, I didn't know where to drive at all. I didn't know where to take a prisoner of war until I immediately thought of Eliane Deneuve, the french woman who owned that rubber factory! I still recognized where her house resided but was unsure if it still existed. The woman could've moved out to relocate her business but at that moment, we didn't have a chance to think about it. It was either drive there, or sit and wait for them to get Samuel.
After an hour of driving across the country, we were lucky enough to see that the house was still there and still in good condition. We knocked on the door and once again... out of luck... Eliane was there. Phew!
She was quite surprised to see both of us there. We sat down inside her kitchen. Questions began to fly out of every corner. Why were we here? Why was Samuel here? What happened to Samuel? Why am I here with Samuel? How in the world were we back at Eliane's house? Why are we at her house? How is it even possible for all three of us to know each other? I was able to get some information out of Samuel about what he's been through. Some were left unsaid due to the traumatic incidents that Samuel wouldn't reveal. I was able to catch up with Eliane on how her factory business was going. But I wasn't able to ask too long since Samuel and Eliane began to hit it up. They went to bed together... and I was left in the kitchen alone. I figured I would just leave them two together and be on my way to the hotel. Eliane can take care of the man. I wrote a letter for her and left it on the table.
It was quite an eventful day I must say.
